The important ones are the dhol, nagara, daba, khol, mridanga, jaidhol etc. The dhol, the common drum, is used in Bihu dance. Taka, a simple instrument of a piece of bamboo-tube split from one side, is beaten to keep time measurement in Bihu song and dance. Others are generally used in religious functions, the khol being the principal tala instrument for Vaishnava music. Jaidhol is also used in wedding ceremonies.
Classical Dance
.Heritage of Classical dance in Assam is of remote origin. In Assamese dances, Hastas (hand gestures), Shirokarma (movement of the head), Padachari , Karana (posture), etc are performed after the manner of Natya Shastra or Sanskrit treatises on dance. The foot-work in an Assamese classical dance is extremely intricate and is called Gati or Belan.
Folk Dance & Music
Husari is carol singing. Batches of boys and young men led by older men go from house to house, sing and dance in the front or back courtyard and collect subscriptions to be spent on repairing the village Namghar (community centre) and on feasting.
