Kerala Education
is a highly stressed and valued feature of Malayali society. School education especially has been highlighted by the government. This is because it is the bare minimum every child should be entitled to, no matter whether higher education becomes possible or not. It is this rationale that has led to the success of such a high level of literacy in Kerala. The three stages of school education in Kerala are – primary, secondary and higher secondary.

Government Initiative

The Government of Kerala has not only been actively promoting school education but has also been setting up the infrastructure necessary to support their ideals. The government has been building schools and successfully running them all over the state. However special emphasis has been laid on the rural sector. In the villages and other rural areas the self governing bodies such as panchayaths have taken up the task of promoting education. The total number of schools under these self governing bodies such as panchayats, municipalities and corporations as in 2000 is 12310. Of the 9694 primary schools in the state, about 61 percent are private run and 36% government run schools. Every village in Kerala has about five primary schools. The number of secondary schools in Kerala has risen sharply mainly due to the government's enormous effort. The number of secondary schooling institutions in 1996-97 there were 2,580 as against 895 in 1960-61. About 975 (37.67%) of these are Government schools and 213 (8.23%) are private unaided schools. The remaining 1,400 (54.1%) secondary schools are private aided schools. The total number of higher secondary education providing schools in Kerala was only a meager 84 till 1994. This has risen to about 931 in 2000. 417 of these are completely government run, 506 are government aided sector and 8 are completely unaided.
