Rich in cultural and political heritage, Malappuram is a district lying in Northern Kerala and bounded on the north by Wayanad District, on the northeast by Tamil Nadu, Thrissur District on the southwest and Palakkad District on the south and southeast.
The district is known for national activism such as the Kilafat Movement and the Malabar Rebellion, which struggled against feudalism and colonialism. Acknowledged by historians as part of Indian Independence Struggle, said movements are also said to be associated with religious overtones.
Literally meaning a land atop hills, Malappuram was part of the Malabar District in the Madras Presidency before the 1947 Indian Independence. The district is enriched with three great rivers namely the Chaliyar, the Kadalundi and the Bharathapuzzha.
